Could Samsung be launching the Gear VR headset in September?
In July, Samsung firmware and upcoming devices tracking website SamMobile claimed that the Korean tech giant is working on a virtual reality device known as the “Gear VR.”
This “Gear VR” is supposedly to be unveiled alongside the Galaxy Note 4 phablet and possibly new “wearable” products.
As the Galaxy Note 4 is almost certainly going to be announced at a Samsung Unpacked even in September 3, just a couple of days before the IFA 2014 electronics fair in Berlin, this means that the “Gear VR” is going to see the light of day in just a couple of weeks.
According to SamMobile, the “Gear VR” a virtual reality headset with a modular design. Unlike the Oculus Rift VR headset, however, the “Gear VR” is not designed to be a standalone VR device.
The virtual reality effect is generated via docking a Galaxy device into the “Gear VR” via USB 3.0. The “Gear VR” then uses the smartphone’s processing power, accelerometer, and gyroscope to track the user’s head movement.
The “Gear VR” reported has an AMOLED display, has an elastic head band with padded cushions on the side, and packs a touchpad to allow users to use the Galaxy phone’s user interface.
While Samsung is handling the hardware, they will be working with Oculus VR on the software aspect.
Samsung will also have a section of Samsung Apps dedicated to the “Gear VR,” and will release the developer preview after the “Gear VR” is announced.
